Background Information
The Gachatha Factory is operated by the Gachatha Farmers Cooperative Society and has been a cornerstone of quality Kenyan coffee since its founding in 1963. Situated on 391 acres amidst the villages of Muthuaini, Thiriku, Gachenge, and Kianjau, the factory serves a membership of about 1,050 farmers, with 900 actively contributing cherries during the harvest season.
The farmers in the cooperative have smallholdings, typically with around 300 coffee trees on less than one hectare of land. Many also grow other crops, contributing to the region’s agricultural diversity.
At Gachatha, sustainability is key. The factory takes extensive measures to manage its wastewater through soak pits, ensuring that local water sources remain uncontaminated. The community is also committed to preserving the indigenous plant life, supporting the native bird and animal species that thrive in the area.
The Washed processing at Gachatha Factory is a hallmark of clarity and precision. Only the ripest cherries are selected, and after meticulous pulping and fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed and dried. This careful attention to detail results in a coffee with a crisp, vibrant profile and nuanced complexity.
Gachatha is a true gem from Nyeri, offering a clean and expressive cup that’s a joy to brew and drink. Whether you’re a seasoned Kenyan coffee lover or exploring this origin for the first time, Gachatha is not to be missed.
